Well appointed 4 star ensuite accommodation in the spectacular countryside of Northumberland, recently voted the most tranquil county in England
Easily located on the A69 in the South Tyne Valley 1/2 mile from the River and its spectacular scenery we are an ideal base from which to visit all the major sites on Hadrian's Wall including Housteads and Vindolanda which as the crow flies are both within 3 miles of here.
A day long circular walk starting from here will take you up through some picturesque farmland, across the Stanegate (the original Roman Road) through another farm and on to Housteads Roman Fort where the highest part of the wall is situated. Then head west along Hadrians Wall to Steel Rig. All downhill now to the Twice Brewed inn for lunch and on to Vindolanda Roman Settlement (allow 3 hours to visit the site) where archaeological digs take place every summer. Then a gentle stroll downhill back to Strand Cottage.
Also within easy reach are the Lake District, Durham Cathedral, Holy Island (Lindisfarne) and the Scottish borders including Gretna Green famous for it's marriages in the old blacksmiths shop. Beamish Open air museum set in the early 18 and 19 hundreds is only 45 minutes drive away and provides a wonderful day out for all the family. Walking is very popular in the area and organised walks are arranged at Haltwhistle (The Centre of Britain 4 miles from here) weekly. We are an ideal base for those wishing to walk the length of Hadrians Wall using their cars and the Hadrians Wall bus to get to the start and finish of the days walk. Being in the centre all parts are easily reached, which means you do not have to unpack every evening and pack again each morning. Golf and fishing are available close by.
We provide local maps with places of interest and local restaurants and pubs serving food marked on them. We also have menus for the same so you can decide in advance where you want to eat and book your table in advance.
