‘Tigh Na Mara’ is a neatly kept old traditional stone house and as its Gaelic name suggests is superbly located by the sea with extensive views of Castlebay harbour. The most prominent feature in the bay is Kisimul Castle, built on a rocky island and ancestral home of the chiefs of the MacNeil clan. Its main tower dates from about 1120 and is reported to be one of Scotland’s oldest castles. It has been recently restored to its original splendour and during the season it is open to visitors, accessible by crossing the harbour in a small boat.
