Swashbuckling Champagne tours for wine lovers

Swashbuckling wine lovers can master the Napoleonic Art of Sabrage – uncorking a champagne bottle with a sword - on an exclusive five-day Champagne-tasting tour with specialist operator Grape Escapes.
Sabrage was Napoleon’s favoured method of opening champagne and the tradition is still kept alive by the Confrérie du Sabre d'Or, the official society dedicated to promotion of the Art of Sabrage in the UK and abroad.
From 27 November – 1 December 2009, Confrérie du Sabre d'Or and Grape Escapes are welcoming budding Sabreurs to join them for their annual gala event where members of the Order will Sabrage hundreds of bottles of bubbly, from Magnums, Jeroboams and even Methusalems at Champagne Pommery.
First-time Sabreurs will get to try their hand at Sabrage tutored by the experts and be will be officially intronised into the Confrérie.
During the five-day trip, guests will also be hosted as the private guests of some of the region’s most prestigious Champagne estates. The full-day guided tour will visit Champagne A Jacquart in the village of Vertus with lunch and tastings, followed by a tour with tastings at Champagne Ruinart, the oldest registered Champagne House, set up in 1729.
This exclusive one-off tour costs £895 per person and includes private coach from London to Reims via Eurotunnel including guided Champagne tastings hosted by Julian White - the British Ambassador of the Order; all meals including dinners at top local restaurants with accompanying wines and Champagnes; the Annual Grand Chapitre gala evening on the Saturday; a Sunday event at Champagne P Brugnon; full day guided tour to Champagne A Jacquart and Champagne Ruinart on the Monday, and four nights’ accommodation in upgraded Privilege rooms at the 3-star Hotel de la Paix in central Reims.
Guests wishing to make their own way to Reims and book the basic package comprising of four nights’ accommodation, the Annual Grand Chapitre gala evening, evening event at Champagne P Brugnon, full day guided tour to Champagne A Jacquart and Champagne Ruinart and all local transfers, can do so at just £610 per person.
