Lufthansa wins renowned red dot design award
3 September 2009
Lufthansa’s new inflight tableware for Economy Class has been named the “best of the best” in the “product design - tableware” category at the 2010 red dot design awards. The “Leaves” design beat more than 3,200 other entries submitted by about 1,400 companies from 49 countries.
The team at LSG Sky Chefs Logistics who designed the tableware accepted the prestigious award last evening at a ceremony at the Aalto Theatre in Essen.
Lufthansa has been serving inflight menus to passengers in Economy Class on the award-winning tableware since December 2008. “With its fresh and modern design, the new “Leaves” crockery fits in perfectly with our Economy Class concept. Its improved stowability and low weight are also real plus points for our flight operations,” says Christian Körfgen, Vice President Product Management, Lufthansa German Airlines.
Its shape is reminiscent of a leaf and the advantage is that all the pieces are ergonomically designed and therefore sit perfectly in the hand. The “Leaves” tableware ensures that meals are presented in a visually and gastronomically appealing manner. Moreover, the fact that the bowls can be flexibly combined is an immense advantage for catering operations, which – for logistical reasons – require high stackability so as to make maximum use of valuable space. For the initial outfitting with Economy Class tableware, Lufthansa ordered about 820,000 coffee cups and 1,700,000 bowls.
The red dot design award is an internationally recognised design prize that is highly esteemed among design specialists, who regard it as seal of quality. The red dot award is presented in the categories “product design - tableware”, “communication design” and “design concept”. With more than 11,000 submissions from a total of 61 countries, the red dot design is one of the largest and most famous design competitions worldwide.
In addition to receiving the red dot design award, Lufthansa’s Economy Class crockery has been nominated for the 2010 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany.
