If your visit is later in the year then you could choose to coincide it with Edinburgh's Winter Festival which takes place during December culminating in the Hogmanay celebrations at New Year. If a spring visit is more to your taste then the Ceilidh Culture, Science Festival, and Film Festival provide lots to see and do.
Edinburgh's most famous street is the Royal Mile which leads up towards the castle. For the fit a walk up the mile allows you to take in the shops and culture before you can take a tour of Edinburgh Castle. The Royal Mile is one of Edinburgh's oldest streets and is in fact so old that it has actually risen in height over the centuries with newer buildings being built on top of older buildings.
Edinburgh Castle is the city's most popular tourist attraction and also the most popular in the whole of Scotland. Parts of the castle date from the 12th century with the majority of what exists today being built during the 16th century. Edinburgh Castle is home to Scotland's Crown Jewells. Visitors can take a tour around the castle and explore the many exhibits and museums contained within.
